Common questions

When does overtime start?

Under the federal FLSA, covered nonexempt employees earn at least time and a half for hours over 40 in a workweek. States, contracts, and employers can add rules such as daily overtime, so these calculators let you set the limit.

Why is my overtime rate higher than 1.5 times my base rate?

Overtime is based on the regular rate, which can include shift differentials, nondiscretionary bonuses, and commissions. The shift differential and piece rate calculators show this calculation.

Is overtime averaged over two weeks?

No. Each workweek stands alone for federal overtime, even if you are paid every two weeks.
