How the work hours per year calculator works

  1. Choose the year and hours per day.
  2. Pick your workdays. Monday to Friday is the default.
  3. Decide on holidays. Federal holidays that fall on your workdays are removed unless you uncheck the option.
  4. Add paid time off in days to see the hours you will actually work.

Work hours per year formula

Work hours = (scheduled workdays − holidays on workdays − PTO days) × hours per day
Paid hours = scheduled workdays × hours per dayWhen holidays and PTO are paid, as for most salaried jobs. A year has 260 to 262 weekdays, so 2,080 to 2,096 hours at 8 a day; the common 2,080 assumes exactly 52 weeks.

Worked example: 2026, 8 hours a day, 10 PTO days

  1. 2026 has 261 weekdays.
  2. 11 federal holidays fall on weekdays, leaving 250 workdays.
  3. Taking 10 days of PTO leaves 240 days worked.
  4. 240 × 8 = 1,920 hours worked, out of 2,088 paid hours.

  • Holidays are the US federal legal public holidays on their observed dates. State, local, and company holidays are not included; add them as PTO days.
  • PTO is counted in whole or partial workdays at your hours per day.

How many work hours are in 2026?

With a Monday-to-Friday, 8-hour schedule, 2026 has 261 weekdays, or 2,088 hours. After the 11 federal holidays that fall on weekdays, there are 250 workdays and 2,000 work hours.

Why do salary calculators use 2,080 hours?

2,080 is 40 hours × 52 weeks. It counts every weekday as paid, including holidays and vacation, which is how most salaries are paid. The hours you actually work are fewer once holidays and time off are taken out.

Which holidays are taken out?

The eleven US federal legal public holidays in 5 U.S.C. 6103, on their observed dates: when a holiday falls on a Saturday it is observed on Friday, and on a Sunday it is observed on Monday. Private employers choose their own holidays, so uncheck the option or add the difference as PTO days.

Can I count a four-day or six-day week?

Yes. Choose the days you work. Only holidays that fall on one of your workdays are removed.

How many work hours are in a month?

It ranges from about 152 to 184 at 8 hours a day, depending on weekdays and holidays. In 2026 the months range from 19 to 22 workdays. The month-by-month table shows each one.
