Common questions

How many hours is a 7 PM to 7 AM shift?

12 hours. With a 30-minute unpaid meal break, it pays 11.5 hours.

Are breaks paid?

Under federal rules, short rest breaks of about 5 to 20 minutes are generally paid, and bona fide meal periods of about 30 minutes or more generally are not. State rules and employer policies can differ.

Is a shift differential required?

Not by federal law. When an employer pays one, federal rules include it in the regular rate used for overtime.
