How the hours and minutes calculator works

Enter one time per row. The running total beside each row shows where you are, so you can check against a timesheet line by line. Switch any row to subtract with the + button. Add rows as needed, up to 40.

Formula

This is the same carrying method used to add up work hours for a week.

Total minutes = Σ ± (hours × 60 + minutes)
Hours = total minutes ÷ 60 (whole part), minutes = the remainder
Decimal hours = total minutes ÷ 60

Worked example

7:45 + 8:30 + 6:50 + 9:15, minus a 30-minute correction

  1. In minutes: 465 + 510 + 410 + 555 − 30 = 1,910 minutes.
  2. 1910 ÷ 60 = 31 remainder 50, so the total is 31h 50m.
  3. As decimal hours: 31.83.

The base-60 mistake

Times addedTyped as decimalsCorrect totalCorrect decimal hours
7:45 + 8:3015.7516h 15m16.25
3:40 + 2:405.806h 20m6.33
8:50 + 8:50 + 8:5025.5026h 30m26.50

Each typed-as-decimal total looks plausible, which is why the mistake is easy to miss. It undercounts whenever the minutes add up past 60. Convert single values with the decimal hours calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add hours and minutes?

Add the hours together and the minutes together. Then divide the minutes by 60: the whole number is extra hours and the remainder is minutes. For example, 7:45 + 8:30 is 15 hours and 75 minutes, which is 16 hours 15 minutes.

Why does my regular calculator give the wrong total?

A regular calculator works in base 10, but minutes are base 60. Adding 7.45 + 8.30 gives 15.75, which looks like 15 hours 75 minutes, or 15.75 decimal hours. The real total is 16 hours 15 minutes, or 16.25 decimal hours.

Can I subtract time?

Yes. Tap the + button on any row after the first to switch it to −. Use this to take out an unpaid break or a correction.

Can I enter more than 59 minutes?

Yes. You can type 90 minutes and it is carried as 1 hour 30 minutes.

How do I turn the total into pay?

Add your hourly rate. The calculator multiplies the total decimal hours by the rate to give gross pay before taxes.
