How to Convert a Salary to an Hourly Rate

Convert a yearly salary to an hourly rate: salary ÷ 2,080 for a 40-hour week, or ÷ your real hours. A salary to hourly table from $30,000 to $120,000.

To find the hourly rate behind a salary, divide the salary by the hours you work in a year.

Hourly rate = annual salary ÷ (hours per week × 52)

For a standard 40-hour week, divide by 2,080: $60,000 ÷ 2,080 = $28.85 an hour.

Salary to hourly table (40 hours, 52 weeks)

Salary Hourly Salary Hourly
$30,000 $14.42 $75,000 $36.06
$40,000 $19.23 $80,000 $38.46
$50,000 $24.04 $90,000 $43.27
$60,000 $28.85 $100,000 $48.08
$70,000 $33.65 $120,000 $57.69

Use the hours you really work

A salary does not change when the week gets longer, so the real hourly rate falls. $60,000 at different weekly hours:

Hours a week Hours a year Hourly rate
40 2,080 $28.85
45 2,340 $25.64
50 2,600 $23.08
55 2,860 $20.98

This is the fairest way to compare a salaried job with an hourly one, especially when the hourly job pays overtime. The job offer comparison calculator does it for two or three offers at once.

Most salaries pay for holidays and vacation. Dividing by 2,080 gives your rate per paid hour. To find your rate per hour actually worked, divide by the hours you work after time off. With 10 holidays and 15 vacation days, a 40-hour employee works about 2,080 − 200 = 1,880 hours, so $60,000 is about $31.91 per hour worked. The work hours per year calculator counts the exact days for any year.

Salary and overtime

Some salaried employees are owed overtime. Being paid a salary does not by itself make a job exempt from overtime; exemption depends on legal tests of the job’s duties and pay. If you are nonexempt, your hourly rate also sets your overtime rate. See regular hours vs overtime hours.
