How to read the chart
At a base rate of $20.00, each overtime hour pays $30.00 at time and a half, which is $10.00 more than a regular hour. Five overtime hours add 5 × $30.00 = $150.00 to the week.
When overtime applies
Under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act, covered nonexempt employees earn at least time and a half for hours over 40 in a workweek (DOL Fact Sheet #23). Double time is not required by federal law; it comes from some state rules, union contracts, or employer policy. Holidays and weekends do not trigger federal overtime by themselves.
When the chart is not enough
If you earn a shift differential, a production bonus, or commission in the same week, the overtime rate is based on your regular rate, which includes that extra pay, not just the base rate (DOL Fact Sheet #56A). The time and a half calculator works out the regular rate, and the overtime calculator prices a full week.
